Inline, /dev, or /transform?

Q Developer bundles three very different sizes of help behind one name. Matching the size of the tool to the size of the job is what the lesson is really about.

Inline

Suggestions as you type

Completions in your editor, notably fluent with AWS SDKs and infrastructure code. The scale of a keystroke: fast, constant, and yours to accept or ignore.

/dev

The feature agent

Describe a feature and the /dev agent plans the implementation and drafts changes across multiple files. The scale of a task: you review the plan and the diff rather than typing the code.

/transform

Migration in bulk

The transform agent upgrades entire codebases, like moving legacy Java applications to a current version. The scale of a project: work measured in weeks compressed into supervised runs.

What you will do in the lesson

You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.

  1. Size the job first. You'll sort a set of tasks into keystroke, task, and project scale, and pick the Q surface that matches each. Mismatched scale is the classic misuse.
  2. Complete AWS code with judgment. You'll review inline suggestions for SDK-heavy code, where fluent-looking output still deserves a second read before accepting.
  3. Brief the /dev agent. You'll write a feature description with a clear boundary and success criteria, then critique the plan the agent would need to satisfy it.
  4. Set expectations for /transform. You'll walk through what a large migration run does and doesn't handle, and where humans stay in the loop.
  5. Ask the console a real question. You'll practice phrasing operational questions, why is this Lambda slow, what does this error mean, the way Q can actually act on them.

Before you start

Is Q Developer only worth it if I'm deep in AWS?

Its general coding help is competent, but the differentiators are AWS-shaped: SDK fluency, console integration, and agents that understand AWS services. If your stack barely touches AWS, other assistants make more sense. If AWS is your daily terrain, the specialization compounds.

Do I need an AWS account for this lesson?

No. The lesson runs in this page without any install, account, or AWS credentials. Q Developer itself has a free tier if you want to try the real thing in your IDE afterwards.

What is /transform actually for?

Large-scale mechanical migration, with upgrading legacy Java applications to current versions as the flagship case. It handles the repetitive bulk, dependency updates, API changes, deprecated patterns, while engineers review and handle the edge cases. It's the clearest example of agent work at project scale.

How does Q Developer compare to GitHub Copilot?

For general-purpose completion and chat they cover similar ground. Q pulls ahead where AWS begins: it can reason about your services, help troubleshoot from the console, and run migration agents that Copilot has no equivalent for. Plenty of AWS-heavy teams end up using Copilot for general code and Q for the cloud side.
