Wrong output: prompt, model, or settings?

When a result disappoints, there are three levers and most people only ever pull one. Knowing which lever matches which failure is what AI Studio teaches faster than anywhere else.

System

System instructions

A standing brief the model reads before every message: role, tone, constraints, output format. When responses drift or ignore your rules, this is usually the lever, not a longer prompt.

Temp

The temperature dial

Low values make output focused and repeatable; high values make it varied and surprising. Extraction and formatting want it low, brainstorming wants it high, and the default suits neither extreme.

Get code

From playground to app

Once a prompt behaves, Get code hands you the equivalent API call in Python, JavaScript, or a curl command. Your experiment becomes a building block instead of a chat transcript.

What you will do in the lesson

You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.

  1. Break a prompt on purpose. You'll take a working prompt and watch it fail as the task shifts, then diagnose whether the fix belongs in the prompt, the settings, or the model choice.
  2. Write a system instruction that holds. You'll draft the standing rules for a task and test whether the model still obeys them three messages in. Most first drafts don't survive; yours will get better.
  3. Run the same prompt at two temperatures. Identical input, wildly different outputs. You'll predict which temperature suits which job before seeing the results.
  4. Pick a model with a reason. Flash and Pro trade speed and cost against depth. You'll match sample tasks to models and check your logic.
  5. Trace prompt to code. You'll follow how a tuned playground prompt maps onto an API call, so the leap from experimenting to building stops being mysterious.

Before you start

How is AI Studio different from the Gemini app?

The Gemini app is a consumer assistant; AI Studio is the developer workbench behind it. Studio exposes what the app hides: system instructions, temperature, model variants, and code export. If you want to understand why a model behaves as it does, Studio is where that's visible.

Do I need an API key or any install for this lesson?

No. Everything happens in the lesson embedded on this page, with nothing to install or sign up for. AI Studio itself is also free to use in a browser with a Google account when you want to go hands-on.

Is this only useful for programmers?

No. Nothing in Studio requires writing code; the settings panel and system instructions are plain forms and plain text. It's arguably the best free place for a non-programmer to build an accurate mental model of how these systems actually respond to their knobs.

I already use ChatGPT daily. What does this add?
