Prompt, Chat, or visual Edit?

Every change in Lovable goes through one of three doors, and the wrong door wastes credits or mangles work you liked. Choosing well is the core skill.

Build by describing

The default: type what you want and Lovable writes the code and updates the preview. Best for new features and structural changes, and it works best one scoped request at a time.

Chat

Discuss without changing

Chat mode talks through your app without touching the code: debug a problem, weigh two approaches, plan the next step. Use it whenever you want thinking, not edits.

Edit

Click and adjust

Visual editing lets you select an element on the page and change its text, color, or size directly. For copy tweaks and styling, it's instant and spends nothing.

What you will do in the lesson

You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.

  1. Open with a scoped first prompt. You'll write the opening description for an app, small enough to succeed, concrete enough to be judged. Vague openers produce vague apps, and you'll see one.
  2. Route ten changes through three doors. Copy fix, layout bug, new feature, weird behavior: you'll assign each to Prompt, Chat, or Edit and check your reasoning against what each door costs.
  3. Debug in Chat mode first. When something breaks, you'll practice asking Lovable what's wrong before asking it to fix anything. Diagnosis first keeps a bad guess from being written into your code.
  4. Sketch the Supabase connection. Real apps need accounts and stored data. You'll walk the decision points of attaching Supabase for auth and a database, and learn what to ask for in plain language.
  5. Recover from a bad generation. Sooner or later a change ruins something you liked. You'll practice reverting to an earlier version instead of prompting deeper into the hole.

Before you start

Can I build a real app with Lovable, or only demos?

Real apps, within limits. With Supabase attached you get authentication, a database, and server logic, and you can publish on your own domain. Complex custom backends still call for engineers, but a working product with users is well within reach.

Is there anything to install before the lesson?

No. This lesson runs inside the page you're on, without a signup or download. Lovable itself also runs in the browser, and there's a free way to try it when you're done here.

Do I own the code Lovable writes?

Yes. Your project is real React and TypeScript code, and you can sync it to your own GitHub repository and take it anywhere. That escape hatch matters: you're never locked into the tool to keep your product.

Lovable or Bolt.new? They sound identical.

They're close cousins. Lovable leans toward polished results and a tight Supabase path, and its visual Edit mode makes small changes cheap. Bolt gives you more direct access to the running code and terminal. If you'd rather describe than code, start with Lovable; if you like lifting the hood, start with Bolt.
