Reroll, vary, or upscale?
Every Midjourney session is a loop: generate a grid of four, then decide what happens next. Which button you press, and when, is most of the craft.
The prompt
One line of text plus optional parameters produces a grid of four images. Concrete nouns and a clear style cue beat long piles of adjectives.
Parameters
Flags at the end of the prompt set aspect ratio (--ar 16:9), stylization strength (--stylize), and more. They control things words describe badly, so it pays to learn a handful.
Vary and upscale
V buttons make four new takes on one image, with Vary Subtle and Vary Strong controlling how far they drift. U upscales your pick to full resolution once the loop is done.
What you will do in the lesson
You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.
- Write a prompt that commits. You compare a hedged prompt against one with a specific subject, medium, and mood, and see which one Midjourney rewards.
- Set the frame with --ar. You practice choosing an aspect ratio for the use case before generating, instead of cropping after.
- Tune --stylize. You watch the same prompt at low and high stylize values and learn when Midjourney's own taste helps and when it hijacks.
- Work the variation loop. You pick the strongest image of four and decide between Vary Subtle and Vary Strong, the choice that steers a session.
- Upscale last, on purpose. You practice ending the loop: recognizing an image worth upscaling instead of rerolling forever.
Before you start
Do I still need Discord?
Not strictly. Midjourney began as a Discord bot, and /imagine still works there, but the web app at midjourney.com now supports generating, organizing, and editing. The concepts in this lesson apply in both places.
Do I need to install or sign up for anything to take this lesson?
No. It runs in the frame on this page, free. Trying Midjourney itself afterwards does require an account, since it is a paid service.
Why do my images look nothing like the examples I see online?
Usually prompt structure. Showcase images tend to come from prompts with specific subjects, deliberate style cues, and tuned parameters, followed by several rounds of variations. The lesson teaches exactly that loop.
How is this different from DALL·E in ChatGPT?
DALL·E optimizes for following instructions conversationally; Midjourney optimizes for images with strong aesthetics and gives you tighter parameter control. If you need an exact scene described precisely, DALL·E often listens better; if you want something striking, Midjourney usually wins.
