What you will do in the lesson
You answer and try things, step by step.
- Build a small notebook. You choose sources for a topic and notice how the selection itself frames what can be asked.
- Ask across documents. You pose a question no single source answers and watch the synthesis, citations and all.
- Chase a citation. You click from a claim to the exact passage behind it, the verification loop that makes grounded answers trustworthy.
- Generate study material. You produce a study guide or FAQ from the notebook and judge what it captured and what it flattened.
- Direct an Audio Overview. You create the two-host audio discussion and learn how to focus it on what you actually need to learn.
Before you start
Does the lesson require NotebookLM or a Google account?
Neither: it runs in the page, free, nothing to install. NotebookLM itself is free with a Google account when you want to build real notebooks.
What can I upload as a source?
PDFs, Google Docs and Slides, pasted text, public websites, and YouTube videos, dozens per notebook. That range means one notebook can hold a course, a project, or a research topic in full.
Will it mix in things from the internet?
No, and that is the point. Answers draw only on your sources, with citations to the passage. If the notebook does not contain the answer, it should say so rather than improvise, which makes it unusually safe for study.
Why not just upload my PDFs to ChatGPT?
ChatGPT will read your files, but it blends them with everything else it knows, and citation is an afterthought. NotebookLM is built on grounding: every answer is pinned to passages in your sources, plus notebook-native tools like study guides and Audio Overviews. For working a specific body of material, it is the sharper instrument.
