A clip in Gemini or a film in Flow?
Veo shows up in two very different places, and the surface you pick decides how much control you get over what happens next.
Sound-on generation
The model generates dialogue, ambience, and effects together with the picture. Prompting the audio explicitly, what gets said and what you hear underneath it, is the skill this unlocks.
Scene building
Google's filmmaking tool wraps Veo in a scene builder: extend a shot, jump to a new angle, and reuse ingredients like characters and props across clips. This is where single generations become sequences.
Image to video
Hand Veo a starting frame, from a photo or an Imagen generation, and describe only the motion. The dependable way to keep a character or product looking identical from shot to shot.
What you will do in the lesson
You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.
- Prompt the audio, not just the picture. You write what a character says and what the scene sounds like, then check what Veo did with each. Silent-era prompting wastes the model's best feature.
- Set the camera in words. Try the same scene as a drone shot, a handheld follow, and a locked-off wide. Camera vocabulary is the cheapest quality upgrade in video prompting.
- Extend a shot in Flow. You continue a clip past its ending and judge whether the extension still feels like the same scene. Continuations drift, and catching it early is the skill.
- Reuse an ingredient. Carry one character into a second shot and evaluate the match. Consistency, not clip quality, is what separates a video from a pile of clips.
- Review like an editor. From several takes, you pick the one that is actually usable and say why. Generating is easy; selecting is the taste you are here to build.
Before you start
What makes Veo 3 different from earlier video models?
Native audio. Speech, sound effects, and ambience are generated together with the image rather than added afterwards, so a single prompt can produce a clip with a talking character and a coherent soundscape.
Do I need to install anything for this lesson?
No. It runs inside this page, free, with nothing to download and no Google account required. Veo access can come later or not at all.
Where can I actually use Veo?
Through the Gemini app and through Flow, Google's AI filmmaking tool. How much you can generate depends on your Google plan, and there is a free way to try it with limited generations.
I already have Sora access. Why look at Veo?
Audio is the headline difference: Veo 3 generates sound and dialogue natively while most rivals give you silent clips. Flow's ingredients and shot extension also solve consistency differently from Sora's storyboards. Comparing both on the same idea is genuinely instructive.
