Level, target, or clean?

Auphonic runs three different algorithms that people lump together as making it sound better. Knowing which one fixed your problem tells you what to adjust on the day one of them does not.

Leveler

Adaptive Leveler

Evens out volume within a recording: the quiet guest, the loud laugh, the host who drifts off mic. It adapts moment by moment through the file, which is exactly what a single volume knob cannot do.

-16 LUFS

Loudness target

Loudness normalization sets the overall level to a standard, measured in LUFS. Podcast platforms expect roughly -16 LUFS for stereo. Hitting the number is why your episode sits at the same volume as everything else in a listener's feed.

Denoise

Noise and hum

Separate reduction for broadband noise, like room hiss, and hum, like 50 or 60 Hz electrical buzz. Auphonic classifies what it hears and applies only what is needed, which is what keeps voices sounding natural.

What you will do in the lesson

You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.

  1. Hear the three problems apart. You listen to clips and attribute each flaw to levels, loudness, or noise, because each calls for a different fix.
  2. Make sense of LUFS. You work out why peak volume and perceived loudness disagree, and match targets to podcast, video, and broadcast delivery.
  3. Watch the Leveler think. You predict what the Adaptive Leveler will do to a two-speaker recording with one quiet voice, then check yourself.
  4. Set up a preset. You assemble the processing chain for a weekly show once, the way Auphonic is meant to be used: configure it, then stop touching it.
  5. Audit the output. You compare before and after and verify the numbers, because trusting automation blindly is how mistakes ship weekly.

Before you start

Why does loudness matter if listeners have a volume knob?

Because they set it once. If your episode is quieter than the one before it in their queue, they hear mumbling; louder, and you startle them. Normalizing to the podcast standard keeps you level with the rest of their feed.

Will it rescue a genuinely bad recording?

It fixes levels, loudness, noise, and hum impressively. It cannot undo heavy clipping, thick room echo, or a mic three feet too far away. Auphonic is finishing, not rescue, so pair it with decent capture habits.

Do I need an Auphonic account for the lesson?

No, the lesson runs in this page with no signup or install. Auphonic itself is a web service with a free monthly allowance of processed audio, enough to master a real episode or two.
