ElevenLabs is really three tools sharing one voice engine, and each answers a different question about whose voice you need.
Text to Speech
Pick a voice from the Voice Library, paste text, generate audio. The Stability and Similarity sliders decide whether the read comes out flat and consistent or expressive and slightly unpredictable. Start here for narration and video voiceover.
Voice cloning
Instant Voice Cloning builds a copy of a voice from about a minute of clean audio, and Professional Voice Cloning gets closer with more. It is for voices you own or have permission to use. Reach for it when the voice itself is the product.
Dubbing Studio
Upload a video and get it back speaking another language in a voice matched to the original speaker. Timing and speaker separation are handled for you. The part you review is the translated script, not the audio.
What you will do in the lesson
You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.
- Hear what the sliders do. You compare the same sentence generated at low and high Stability and pick which reading fits a given script.
- Choose a voice on purpose. Given three use cases, you match each to a Voice Library voice and explain why the mismatched options fail.
- Write text that speaks well. You edit a paragraph written for the eye into one written for the ear, with punctuation doing the pacing.
- Decide when cloning is fair. You sort real scenarios into acceptable, needs consent, and off limits before going anywhere near the feature itself.
- Plan a dubbing pass. You pick which parts of a short video's translated script to fix by hand and which to trust as generated.
Before you start
Can it really copy my voice from one minute of audio?
Instant Voice Cloning gets a recognizable copy from roughly a minute of clean speech, and Professional Voice Cloning gets much closer with a few hours. Recognizable is not identical: accents and quirks vary. The lesson covers what each tier is actually for.
Is cloning someone's voice legal?
Cloning your own voice, or one you have written permission to use, is fine. Cloning a public figure or a colleague without consent violates ElevenLabs' terms and, in many places, the law. The lesson spends a section on where those lines sit.
Do I need an ElevenLabs account for this lesson?
No. The lesson runs in the frame on this page with no signup and nothing to install. ElevenLabs itself has a free way to try it when you want to generate audio afterwards.
How is this different from the read-aloud voice on my phone?
Built-in text to speech reads text; it does not perform it. ElevenLabs voices carry emphasis, pacing, and emotion, and can be cloned or carried across languages. If system voices are all you have heard, the first generation is the surprise.
