Learn CapCut in one 5 minute cut.

CapCut is the free editor behind a huge share of TikTok and Reels content, on phone, desktop, and web. In this lesson you practice timeline cuts, auto captions, and judging when a template beats editing from scratch.

Ole is taking you through this one. Free, and it runs right here. No signup.

V2 · CONCEPTS

Template or timeline?

CapCut is really two editors sharing one app, and most frustrated beginners are fighting the wrong one for the video they want to make.

Template

Borrow the edit

Drop your clips into a trending template and CapCut times the cuts, effects, and music for you. Reach for it when the format is the point and your footage just fills the slots.

Timeline

Build it yourself

Layered tracks with keyframes, speed curves, and transitions you place by hand. This is where you go when the template almost fits but not quite, which is most of the time once you develop taste.

Captions

Auto captions

One tap transcribes your audio into styled, word-by-word captions on their own track. They are startlingly good and still wrong about names, so you proofread before export.

V3 · SEQUENCE

What you will do in the lesson

Five clips, already on the track. You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.

  1. Make your first split. You take a clip, find the moment the energy dips, and cut it out. Tight pacing is one small decision repeated fifty times.
  2. Judge a template honestly. Compare two templates against the same footage and pick the one that serves it. Fighting a template usually costs more than a manual edit.
  3. Caption it, then catch the error. Run auto captions, then hunt down the word CapCut misheard. Every captioning tool fails the same way, so the habit transfers.
  4. Restrain the effects. Choose the one effect that supports the story and skip the rest. Overdecorated video reads as amateur faster than plain video ever does.
  5. Export for the platform. You match aspect ratio and resolution to where the video is going. A 9:16 vertical export is not just a cropped 16:9.

Drag or scroll the rail to see every clip.

A2 · NOTES

Before you start

Is CapCut just a TikTok accessory?

It is made by ByteDance and integrates tightly with TikTok, but it exports standard video files you can post anywhere. The desktop version is a capable general editor for horizontal and longer work too.

Do I need to install anything for this lesson?

No. The lesson runs right in this page, no signup and no download. Installing CapCut afterwards is optional, and the core editor is free.

Do I need my own footage to follow along?

No. The lesson is interactive: you answer questions and make editing calls on prepared examples. Bring your own clips to CapCut afterwards and the decisions will feel familiar.

I already use iMovie. Why switch?

iMovie is solid for simple horizontal cuts. CapCut adds auto captions, a template ecosystem, and effects tuned for vertical short-form, and it lives on the phone where your footage already is. Plenty of people keep both.
