Talking, steering, or building?[2]

Most people only ever chat. The interesting skills sit one level up: shaping how a character behaves mid-conversation, and defining one from scratch. Those are the levels this lesson works at.

Chat

Talk to a character

Every character has a greeting, a personality, and a memory of your conversation. Swiping between response options and rating replies steers who they become with you.

Persona

Who you are to them

A Persona is a description of you that characters read: your name, context, preferences. Set one and every conversation starts already knowing what matters.

Create

Define a character

Creating a character is writing: a greeting, a short definition, example dialogue. The quality of those few hundred words decides whether it stays in character an hour later.

What you will do in the lesson[1]

You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.

  1. Interview a character. You probe an existing character to find the edges of its persona: what it knows, what it invents, where it breaks.
  2. Steer without commands. You practise redirecting a drifting conversation using tone and framing rather than restarting.
  3. Set up a Persona. You write a Persona and watch how the same character treats you differently once it knows who you are.
  4. Draft a character definition. You write the greeting and definition for a character of your own design and predict its failure modes.
  5. Test it in conversation. You put your creation through the interview from step one and revise the definition based on where it cracked.

People also ask

Do I need the Character.AI app for this lesson?

No install and no account: the lesson runs in this page. Character.AI itself is free to use on the web and mobile if you continue.

Is Character.AI just for roleplay?

Roleplay is the famous part, but people also use characters for language practice, interview rehearsal, brainstorming partners, and study help. The same skills, steering and definition-writing, power all of it.

Are the characters real people or scripted?

Neither. Each character is a language model steered by a written definition, usually authored by another user. Nothing is scripted, which is why the same character can be brilliant one day and off-script the next, and why definition quality matters.

How is this different from talking to ChatGPT?

ChatGPT aims to be one consistent, helpful assistant. Character.AI is a stage: thousands of distinct voices with persistent personalities, memory of your relationship, and community authorship. If ChatGPT is a colleague, Character.AI is a cast.
