Type @ to pull Gmail, Drive, Docs, Maps, or YouTube into the conversation. Gemini answers from your actual messages and files instead of the open web. This is the feature no other assistant can copy.
Reusable assistants
A Gem is Gemini with standing instructions you write once: a tone, a role, a format. Build one for any prompt you find yourself retyping weekly.
Deep Research
Give it a question and it plans, browses dozens of sources, and returns a cited report minutes later. Use it for questions that would otherwise cost you an afternoon of tabs.
What you will do in the lesson
- Start in plain chat. You ask a normal question and note what Gemini does with it, so you have a baseline before the interesting features.
- Pull in a Google app. You practise the @ mention, asking a question that only your Gmail or Drive could answer, and see how grounding changes the reply.
- Draft where the work lives. You use Gemini on a Docs-style task: summarising, rewriting, and extending text in place instead of copy-pasting between tabs.
- Sketch a Gem. You turn a prompt you would reuse into standing instructions and test whether the Gem actually follows them.
- Scope a Deep Research run. You learn to phrase a research question narrowly enough that the report that comes back is one you will actually read.
Before you start
Do I need a Google account to take this lesson?
No, and nothing installs either. The lesson runs right here in the page. A Google account only matters later, when you want Gemini connected to your own Gmail and Drive.
Is Gemini free?
The core assistant is free with a Google account, including a taste of the features this lesson covers. Higher tiers add the strongest models and more Deep Research runs. Free is plenty for learning.
Can Gemini really read my email?
Only when you invoke it, and only your own account's data. It answers from your messages rather than training on them. Check your workplace policy before connecting a work account.
How is this different from ChatGPT?
Capabilities overlap a lot in plain chat. The separation is the Google hookup: Gemini can answer from your Gmail, Drive, and Calendar, which ChatGPT cannot see. If you live in Google apps, that is the deciding feature.
