The standard model answers in seconds and is right for drafting, rewriting, and everyday questions. It reads your files and images too. Use it when speed matters more than depth.
Reasoning on demand
Thinking models work through a problem step by step before replying. Slower, but far better for math, planning, tricky code, and anything with more than one constraint.
Prebuilt specialists
GPTs are versions of ChatGPT preloaded with instructions and files for one job. Browse the store for one before writing a long prompt from scratch, or build your own.
What you will do in the lesson
- Ask the same question twice. You put one prompt to the fast model and a Thinking model, then compare what each got right. The gap teaches you when the picker matters.
- Fix a vague prompt. You take a one-line request that produced a generic answer and add context, constraints, and a format. Watch the output change.
- Iterate instead of restarting. You practise the follow-up: tightening tone, cutting length, and asking ChatGPT to critique its own draft.
- Hand it a file. You give it a document and drill questions that pull specifics out of it, rather than a summary you will never read.
- Catch a confident mistake. You get an answer with an error in it and practise verifying before you paste it anywhere that matters.

Is ChatGPT free to use?
There is a free tier that covers everything this lesson practises, with usage limits on the newest models. Paid plans raise the limits and add heavier research features. You do not need one to start.
Do I need an account or an install for this lesson?
No. The lesson runs in the frame on this page with nothing to sign up for or download. You can open ChatGPT afterwards to keep practising.
Can I trust what it tells me?
Mostly, but not blindly. ChatGPT can state wrong things fluently, which is why one exercise in the lesson is spotting and checking a confident error. Verify anything you plan to act on.
I already use Google. When would I reach for ChatGPT instead?
Google is faster when a link is the answer, like an address or a live score. ChatGPT wins when you need something made: a draft, a plan, an explanation shaped to your situation, or code.
