Edit words, not waveforms.
Every Descript feature flows from one inversion: the transcript is the timeline. Once that clicks, most of traditional editing collapses into deleting sentences.
Text is the timeline
Delete a sentence in the transcript and it disappears from the recording. Cutting a podcast becomes proofreading, which is a skill you already have.
Type a correction
A clone of your voice speaks text you type, so a flubbed number or a renamed product gets fixed without re-recording. It trains only on your own consented voice.
Studio Sound
One toggle removes noise and echo and makes a laptop mic sound close-miked. It is strong medicine, and you will practice hearing when it has been overapplied.
What you will do in the lesson
Five clips, already on the track. You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.
- Cut a ramble by reading it. You tighten a transcript the way an editor tightens prose, and the audio follows. Watch a two-minute answer become a good thirty-second one.
- Strip the filler. Remove the ums and uhs in a single pass, then decide which pauses to put back. Perfectly fluent speech sounds robotic; the lesson is about the line.
- Fix a flub with Overdub. You type a correction into the transcript and judge whether the patched audio is detectable. Short factual fixes pass; whole re-acted sentences rarely do.
- Salvage bad audio. Apply Studio Sound to an echoey recording and listen critically for artifacts. Knowing when to dial it back separates clean from processed.
- Pull a clip. You find a highlight by searching the transcript and cut it for social. The transcript is also your best discovery tool, not just your editor.

Before you start
Does transcript editing work for video too?
Yes. Video follows the text exactly as audio does, and Descript adds scene layouts, captions, and screen recording on top. Talking-head video is arguably where the workflow shines brightest.
Do I need to install anything for this lesson?
No install and no account: the lesson runs in this page. Descript itself is an app you would install later if you adopt it, and there is a free way to try it.
Could someone clone my voice with Overdub?
Descript requires a live consent recording in your own voice before a clone can be trained, so it cannot be built from files someone else uploads. The feature is scoped to you correcting you.
I already edit in Premiere. Is Descript for me?
Different jobs. For talk-driven content, podcasts, interviews, tutorials, Descript is dramatically faster because the edit is textual. Cinematic and effects-heavy work still belongs in Premiere, and plenty of editors rough-cut in Descript and finish in their NLE.
