Paraphrasing is a dial, not a button
Every QuillBot control trades transformation against fidelity. Push far enough and you get genuinely fresh prose; push slightly further and you get a new meaning you did not intend.
Paraphraser modes
Standard balances change and fidelity, Fluency just smooths the grammar, and modes like Formal, Simple, Shorten, and Expand each push the text in one named direction. Choosing the mode is choosing your goal.
Synonym slider
Controls how aggressively words get swapped, and clicking any word in the output offers alternatives. Low settings preserve your phrasing; high settings rewrite hard and need a careful meaning check.
Summarizer
Condenses long text either as extracted key sentences or as a rewritten paragraph, with a length control. Key-sentence mode stays verbatim and safe; paragraph mode reads better but interprets.
II. The practice
What you will do in the lesson
You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.
- Run one sentence through three modes. You paraphrase the same sentence in Standard, Formal, and Simple, then name exactly what changed in each. Seeing the modes side by side beats any description of them.
- Move the slider. Same sentence, low synonym setting, then high. You find the point where the wording is new but the meaning has quietly shifted, which is the point to remember forever.
- Rescue a bad swap. You click a wrongly swapped word in the output and pick a better alternative, or restore the original. The output is a draft you steer, not a verdict you accept.
- Shorten with intent. Run Shorten mode on a bloated paragraph, then check that nothing essential fell out. Cutting words is easy; the skill is confirming what the cut cost.
- Draw your own line. You decide which uses are legitimate, rewording your own draft, and which are not, laundering a source you should be citing. The tool will not draw that line, so you practice drawing it.

Before you start
Is using QuillBot plagiarism?
Paraphrasing changes words, not attribution: an idea taken from a source needs a citation no matter how the sentence is worded. Rewording your own drafts is fair game. If you are a student, your institution's policy is the line that counts, so check it.
Which mode should I default to?
Standard for most rewording, Fluency when the text just needs its grammar smoothed, and the directional modes when you have a specific goal like formality or length. The lesson has you feel the differences directly instead of memorizing a rule.
Do I need to install anything for this lesson?
No. It all runs in the embedded lesson on this page, without an account. QuillBot itself has a free tier when you want to paraphrase your own text afterwards.
I already have Grammarly. Does QuillBot add anything?
They point in different directions. Grammarly critiques the text you wrote and suggests fixes; QuillBot regenerates the text in a direction you choose. One is correction, the other is transformation, and plenty of writers keep both open.
