How fast can you actually listen?
Speed is Speechify's whole bet: most people can comprehend speech far faster than they read, but only if they climb to that speed gradually.
The speed ramp
Speechify measures pace in words per minute and lets you raise it in small steps. Most listeners plateau around double their reading speed with comprehension intact. Jumping straight to triple speed is how people conclude it does not work.
Sustainable voices
A voice you enjoy for a demo is not always one you can absorb hours of. Speechify's HD voices, including celebrity ones like Snoop Dogg and Gwyneth Paltrow, differ in how well they hold up at high speed.

What you will do in the lesson
You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.
- Find your baseline. You estimate your reading speed, then take in the same passage at three listening paces and check comprehension honestly.
- Climb the ramp. You practice the small-increment method: raise the speed one step, hold it until it feels slow, repeat.
- Sort your reading. You classify real materials, dense contracts, news, textbooks, into listen, read, and listen then reread.
- Choose a workhorse voice. You compare voices at high speed, where clarity differences invisible at normal pace become obvious.
- Build the capture habit. You walk through routing a web article, a PDF, and a photographed page into one listening queue.
Before you start
Do I retain as much when listening as when reading?
For most material, comprehension holds up well at moderate speeds and improves with practice. Dense technical or mathematical text is the exception, and the lesson helps you sort which is which in your own reading pile.
Is Speechify only for people with dyslexia?
It started as an accessibility tool and remains excellent for dyslexia and ADHD, but most users now are simply people with more reading than reading time. Commuters and students are the core audience.
