Grok can read the live X firehose, which makes it unusually good at breaking news, public reactions, and what people are saying this hour. Treat posts as sentiment, not fact.
Reasoning mode
Think mode has Grok work a problem through before answering rather than replying on instinct. Use it for logic, math, code, and any question where the first guess is usually wrong.
Agentic research
DeepSearch sends Grok off to browse, cross-check, and compile a sourced report on your question. Slower than a chat reply, and meant for questions that deserve it.
What you will do in the lesson
- Ask about the last 24 hours. You put a current-events question to Grok and practise separating what sources report from what posters claim.
- Read the room on X. You use Grok to summarise reaction to a topic and label it for what it is: sentiment, with all its bias.
- Switch into Think mode. You take a trick question the instant answer gets wrong and watch the reasoning mode handle it differently.
- Commission a DeepSearch. You phrase a research question, let the agent dig, and then audit the citations it comes back with.
- Calibrate the personality. You learn where Grok's irreverence is harmless colour and where you should ask it to play it straight.
Before you start
Does the lesson need an X account or an install?
No. It runs in this page with nothing to download or sign into. Grok itself is available through X and standalone apps, with a free way to try it.
Is Grok only useful if I use X?
No, it is a full general assistant with reasoning and research modes. But the live X integration is the thing rivals cannot offer, so heavy X users get the most extra value.
How current is Grok's information really?
For events on X, close to real time, which is genuinely unusual. For everything else it behaves like other assistants: trained knowledge plus web search. The lesson practises telling those apart.
How does Grok compare with Perplexity for research?
Perplexity is stricter about citations and built purely for sourced answers. Grok trades some of that rigor for real-time social awareness and a chattier default. For breaking events, Grok; for a careful, fully cited answer, Perplexity.
