Learn Qwen Chat in 5 minutes.

Qwen Chat is the front door to Alibaba's Qwen models, a family strong in coding, math, and work across dozens of languages. Expect to practise switching models to match the task, flipping the thinking toggle on hard problems, and testing multilingual output.

Which Qwen, and thinking or not?

Qwen Chat exposes choices most assistants hide: several models of different strengths and a switch for step-by-step reasoning. Two small decisions, made per task, decide most of your output quality.
Models

A family, not one

The picker offers flagship, coder-tuned, and vision-capable Qwen models. The specialised variants beat the generalist inside their lane, so the picker is worth two seconds of thought.

Thinking

Slow mode on demand

The thinking toggle makes the model reason through a problem before answering, trading seconds for accuracy. Save it for math, logic, and gnarly code rather than every message.

Languages

Beyond English

Qwen models are trained heavily across languages, with especially strong Chinese and English. Translation, cross-language drafting, and non-English answers are core strengths, not afterthoughts.

What you will do in the lesson

You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.
  1. Choose a model on purpose. You take one coding task and one writing task and pick a model for each, with reasons rather than defaults.
  2. Toggle thinking on a hard problem. You run the same problem both ways, compare the answers, then decide which kinds of questions justify the wait.
  3. Cross a language boundary. You draft something in one language and rework it in another, watching what survives the crossing.
  4. Stress-test a code answer. You ask for code, then interrogate the response for the assumption it silently made.
  5. Build a routing habit. You finish with a quick drill matching task types to model and mode combinations.

Before you start

Do I need an account with Qwen or anything installed?

No, the lesson runs in this page without sign-ups or downloads. Qwen Chat itself is free to try in a browser afterwards.

Who makes Qwen?

Qwen is Alibaba Cloud's model family, and it has become one of the most downloaded open-weight lines in the world. Many products you meet elsewhere quietly run a Qwen model under the hood.

Are Qwen's answers in English any good?

Yes. The models are genuinely multilingual rather than translated, and English performance is competitive with Western peers on many benchmarks. The multilingual step in the lesson lets you judge for yourself.

I already use DeepSeek. Why look at Qwen?

They are the two leading Chinese open-model families, but they specialise differently: DeepSeek is famous for its reasoning traces, while Qwen's spread of coder, vision, and size variants makes it stronger as a toolbox. If you build things or self-host, Qwen's range is the draw.
